A bit about Susannah C

I have over ten years classroom teaching experience, teaching in independent and maintained schools in Hertfordshire and London. I am highly experienced in teaching to GCSE, A Level and IB. I work with students in a caring and supportive way to build confidence in subject knowledge and technique. I specialise in 20th Century History and have extensive experience in teaching 20th Century Authoritarian Rule under Hitler, Mao and Stalin as well as the Cold War. Over the past ten years I have built considerable expertise in teaching the AQA and IGCSE History courses as well as IB at Standard and Higher Level. I began tutoring in 2020, helping students with coursework on Indian Independence during an extended period of lockdown due to Covid-19. I have since tutored in A Level History alongside my classroom teaching career. I like to start by assessing the specific learning needs and targets of a student through an initial conversation which I then use to create a bespoke learning plan. A typical session would begin with setting several clear targets for the session before completing bespoke activities such as practice questions or going through model answers to help achieve these targets. Helping to build or rebuild a student's confidence and interest in a subject. I am a warm and supportive tutor , combining clear expectations with empathy and understanding. I am expert in helping students to feel they are in a safe learning space where they are not afraid to try out ideas and build their expertise. Seeing students succeed where they thought they were bound to fail. A happy and confident student stands a far better chance of succeeding in learning. No student is unteachable. Warm approach and sense of humour. Supporting students who had missed considerable amounts of time in school due to Covid-19 to achieve 9s in their GCSE exams. PGCE Secondary History through University of Cambridge BA History through University of London (First) MA Public History through University of London My love of History combined with being taught by inspirational teachers, particularly during Sixth Form. I had been very unhappy in my previous school and had underachieved in exams, being taught by new teachers in a much more supportive and academically inspiring environment made me want to recreate that same turnaround for other students. I love reading and creative writing, particularly Historical Fiction. I also love getting outdoors and into the countryside, particularly hiking and sailing. I also really enjoy baking. I teach the full secondary age range from 11-18. I have considerable experience teaching the AQA and IGCSE exam boards as well as OCR and AQA A Level and IB.
